'Three Dimensions of Divinity - Thanjavur Art Revealed' is a revelation of Thanjavur art. Originating in the famed temple town in Tamil Nadu, a cradle of South Indian culture, the art form was inspired by over 1000 years of evolving spiritual thought. Painting commissions thrived - especially from religious institutions and royal courts - for over 400 years. Thanjavur painting adorned temple walls and palace halls. Then, in the mid-19th century, it was edged out by the arrival of lithographic prints. The late 20th century saw a revival for the art form. Pieces were commissioned to adorn people’s homes as a focus for religious expression. Private collections of rare works thrived simultaneously. One of the most prolific and passionate private collectors, Mr. Kuldip Singh, gathered, restored and provided historical context for 350 pieces. He then bequeathed his entire collection to the trustees of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai, in 2019.
The curated journey through CSMVS collection pays tribute to the unique layering technique of the art form that brought deities, temples, religious and cultural leaders, and epics from our history to life, through calendar art we uncover the modern iterations of Thanjavur. The exhibition touches upon the three dimensions of this unique art form; The religion, which was the driving force behind the creation of the Thanjavur paintings; the patronage which includes the patron kings, religious societies and third, Art connoisseurs of modern times and the artists who created this wonderful legacy.
