Surya, the Sun God

This sandstone panel depicts Surya, the revered Vedic sun god, symbolizing light, energy, and time. Adorned with a Karanda Mukuta (crown), earrings, and intricate ornaments, Surya holds lotus flowers, representing purity and life. At the center, his charioteer, Aruna, guides a seven-horse chariot, signifying the days of the week, with a serpent-shaped rein connecting them to a single wheel. Worshipped in various forms like Savitr and Pushan, Surya embodies vitality and cosmic order. This exquisite sculpture showcases the artistic brilliance and spiritual depth of early medieval Indian art.
