Prabhamandal

The Prabhamandal, or "circle of light," is an ornate arch symbolizing divine radiance, often placed behind a deity. This 11th-century metal piece intricately depicts key moments from Buddha’s life. Scenes include his birth, the first sermon at Sarnath (Dharmachakramudra), the Miracle of Sravasti, and Parinirvana, with Ananda mourning at his feet. A stupa at the apex represents the enshrining of relics. Other depictions include Buddha as a wandering monk and receiving a honey offering. Merging spiritual devotion with exquisite craftsmanship, this Prabhamandal reflects the artistic excellence and deep reverence of early medieval Buddhist art.
