Pillar Edict/ Inscription lakshman sen era 83

This boundary pillar edict of the 12th c. AD is made of black stone and obtained from Jani Bigha of Bodhgaya, Gaya. Buddha is engraved in Bhumisparsha Mudra under the Peepal tree on the top of the pillar edict. Additionally, there is a depiction of the Sun on the right side and the moon on the left side, and on the downside, there is an inscription consisting of 14 lines of Nagari script. The language of the pillar edict is Sanskrit, and the letters are of the Nagari script from Eastern India, from where both Maithili and Nagari has been originated. The inscription records the grant of a village named Kotthala in the district of Saptaghatta for the maintenance of the Diamond Throne and monastery attached to the Ceylonese monk Mangalasvamin by the king Jayasena, the son of Buddhasena, the lord of Pithi (pithi-pati.) There is also a description of a dwarf & an ass at the bottom. The animal groups below are all incised. The inscription engraved on the boundary pillar is of the 83rd year of the Lakshmanasena era.
