Mithuna Couple

Mithuna pair (2nd c. BC) under Ashoka tree found from Patna City. Two images of the Shunga period of male and female in erotic postures are carved on sandstone. In this sculpture, a man makes a courtship request to a woman, which is marked in the pose. The woman leans against the stem of the tree, her left arm rests on the left shoulder of the man, her right arm is pendent, and the hand claps mekhala. The man embraces the woman with his right hand and holds a drinking vessel in his left towards her; probably shyly, both are standing with an averted face.
