This exquisite bronze sculpture, titled Mahavira, is placed over a small lotus pitha. The twenty-fourth and last Tirthankar - or path-finder of Jainism, Mahavira, hailed from the city of Vaishali and is acknowledged as the 24th Great Teacher of his tradition. He was the principal founder of Jainism, one of the major religions of the Indian subcontinent.Bihar is a land of religious confluence, where many religions and beliefs have either originated or thrived. Mahavira in particular was a prominent religious leader and was given the title ‘Jina’, which meant he was a conqueror of inner enemies such as greed, attachment and pride. These principles and ethics eventually became synonymous with the Jain community, and are practiced even today. Another interesting fact about Mahavira is that he gave rise to the ideal of Ahimsa, or non-violence, which influenced many future leaders, such as Ashoka and more popularly, Mahatma Gandhi.
