Tara

This is an image of Ashtabhaya(aṣṭabhaya). In general, Tārā is especially seen as a saviour who provides salvation and protection from the eight fears (aṣṭabhaya) or eight dangers (aṣṭaghora). This is a common theme in her iconography, and she is sometimes depicted in a specific iconographical style called “Tara, who protects from the eight dangers”. The eight dangers (aṣṭaghora) are lions, elephants, fire, snakes, robbers, waters, infectious diseases and demons. This sutra also contains an incantation (dharani) which is chanted to invoke Tārā's protection. This image is the best example of Ashtabhaya Tara. The depicted 8 scenes are 8 great perils or ashtamahabhaya, for which the goddess is the saviour. Five Dhyani Buddhas in a row at the top and vidyadhara couples on clouds in the upper left and right corners.
